Know your skin tone to know your hair color

Coloring the hair is a brilliant way to refresh the appearance and create a completely new look. Choosing a right color can be a little tricky. One might feel skeptical about which hair color to choose, since there are hundreds available to choose from. It is advisable to think twice before deciding on a color that’s ideal.

The right hair color can make a huge difference in one’s appearance. It helps the skin color look even and accentuates the color of one’s eyes too. The wrong hair color on the other hand can make one look dull and washed-out.

Here are few pointers to find the hair color for skin tones:

While there are a variety of complexions, all complexions fall into two different skin tone category – warm or cool.

Choose your skin tone
The quickest way to work out if you’re warm or cool is to take a look at the veins in one’s arms while in natural light.
o   If the color of the veins looks green then the person is of a warm skin tone
o   If it’s blue then you are a cool skin tone.

Warm skin tones
If a person is fair skinned with freckles, olive skinned, or perhaps darker skinned or mixed ethnicity and the hair color is brown, golden, reddish brown, or golden blond. They should use colors like chestnut, dark golden brown, auburn and mahogany, if one only wants to highlight then they should go with cinnamon and copper colors. People with warm skin tones should avoid golden blond as this will only intensify the yellow in the skin and give an unhealthy glow. Add red tones to the color to neutralize yellow skin tones.

Cool skin tones
People with cool undertones might have blue-black, darkest brown, medium ash, golden blond or white blond as their natural hair color. Their skin tone is normally very light, medium with no cheek color, or brown to very dark brown. Using a color like ash brown will tone down the pink of the skin. Setting out the cool colors right will give fair skinned people a smooth ivory look. For people with dark skin with cool undertones should choose burgundy or cherry color for their hair. They can even use these as a base color or highlight color. The red tone in the hair color gives dark skin a smooth even look.

There are of course some exceptions where combinations of warm and cool hair colors can be used together with various techniques for contrast or a specific purpose, but again this should be left to the care of highly professional and trained hair colorist only.

Stay close to your natural color
For the most attractive outcome, one will want to select a hair color that matches the warm, cool or neutral skin tone. It is advisable to stay within 3 or 4 shades of the natural hair color, whether one wants to lighten or darken the hair color.

Most beautiful hair color will bring out the nuances of one’s skin tone and enhance its natural beauty. The skin tone has been passed down to a person from generations. A natural substance which gives the skin, hair, and eyes their color, not only dictates which makeup colors work best, but also what shade of hair color is most flattering.

If you are still not sure about which hair color to go with, it is fruitful to ask a professional hair stylist. He/she would be able to help you settle on one, and it’s always better to let someone with training do the hard work.

Most professional hair salons have a dedicated hair color expert, who will be able to advice about how best to achieve the desired look. It may be a good start to go for a semi-permanent color to begin with. Many hair salons use good quality hair products and hair colors. Hence, it won’t be difficult to find the best that suits you.
